The Schuylkill Technology Center (STC) is on record with the appropriate Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) district offices as an approved training facility for the above listed classes. STC provides miners of the Anthracite region (Schuylkill, Dauphin, Northumberland, Montour, Columbia, Carbon, Luzerne, Lackawanna, Berks, Sullivan, Snyder, Lehigh, Union, & Lycoming Counties) of Eastern Pennsylvania with Quality Health & Safety Training. Over the past twenty-two years, STC has provided professional mine & health training (as required by the Act of 1977) to miners who do not have the resources and/or the qualified personnel to conduct quality safety & health training.
All of the instructors employed by STC are monitored on a continuing basis for accuracy and continuity of current standards as required by Federal and State regulations. STC constantly reviews and updates course curricula by attending training seminars, such as TRAM, Penn State Blasting Conference, and Spring Thaw events to ensure the material is current and applicable to the mining industry.
STC schedules classes with the requirements of having a minimum of 5 trainees for all classes and a maximum of 10 trainees for the First Aid class; and a maximum of 30 trainees for both the New Miner and Annual Refresher classes. Enrollment is on a first come basis. Training is preferred to be scheduled at the STC facilities; however, dependent upon the needs of the operation, classes may be scheduled off-campus at the operator’s site or other acceptable facilities.
During registration it will be confirmed that the trainee(s) are in the right class. It is not MSHA’s policy to allow students from different mining types (underground/surface or coal/metal non-metal) to be mixed in the same class. Once the training session is completed, an MSHA 5000-23 Training Certificate will be provided to each trainee.
The program is funded through the PA Bureau of Mine Safety.
